Chiropractic care is a drug free, natural approach to treating many common ailments and syndromes. This type of treatment utilizes specific types of joint manipulation (adjustment). This involves moving specific bones within a joint to alleviate loss of motion, joint swelling and irritation of surrounding soft tissues and nerves. These adjustments can be performed on all moveable joints within the body. However, most treatment involves the bones of the spine, known as the vertebrae. Normally, treatment involves an adjustment as well as the use of adjunctive physical therapy modalities. These modalities include electric stimulation, ultrasound, traction, hydro heat (hot) and cyro (cold) therapies, trigger point therapy, stretching exercises and rehabilitative resistance exercises.
The doctor of chiropractic will utilize X-ray studies and physical exam findings to help diagnose the patient’s condition and find the cause of the patient’s problem. This is different from normal medical care where patients are prescribed medications that just cover up what the body is telling us. The doctor of chiropractic also works within the health care system, side by side with orthopedic and neurological surgeons, physical therapists, medical physicians, osteopaths and massage therapists to help resolve neuromuscular skeletal injuries and conditions.
